Fans of Sunrise Extra Firm, Firm and Medium Firm tofu have another reason to feel good about their fav block of goodness; these products are now endorsed by the Heart and Stroke Foundation’s Health Check program.

Health Check has been helping Canadians make heart healthy choices for the past 10 years. If you toss a Health Check product into your shopping cart, whether it be a loaf of bread, a can of soup and now Sunrise red, green and blue tofu packs, you know that you are making a nutritious and healthful addition to your eating repertoire. Registered dieticians and other nutrition experts formed the Technical Advisory Committee and worked together to develop nutrient criteria and the basis from which to assess the health of a product. With the Healthy Check’s strict regulations, consumers can feel confident that the endorsed product they have chosen is indeed a healthy choice as testified by an outside, objective and credible body. The Health Check program was instrumental in proving the need for better nutritional information on products and has helped pave the way for current label requirements. When the Health Check program was first launched, it required participating products to provide a nutritional fact table to help shoppers make more informed decisions, which a decade ago was not a label requirement.
Not only does the program help Canadians make better choices, it encourages companies to make their products healthier to meet the needs of the Canadian population. “Health Check encourages Canadian food manufacturers to make their foods healthier and this is critical to reducing the burden of nutrition-related diseases such as hyper-tension and obesity,” according to Dr. Norm Campbell, President of Blood Pressure Canada.1 With the rise of heart disease and other health ailments, making smart nutritious choices is more important than ever. And thanks to the Heart and Stroke foundation, it is now easier than ever to pick up the right thing.
Some products, like Sunrise tofu, are naturally healthy and as such are a perfect fit for the Health Check program. Shoppers who are unfamiliar with tofu or unsure of its health benefits will now see the Health Check mark and understand its nutritious properties. This will hopefully encourage newbies to take the plunge and give tofu a try.
